The apple of our pie

The apple of our pie

Who doesn't love tucking into a delicious pie? The gang at Sorted most certainly does – that's why several of us have to buy new wardrobes of clothing every few months!

Well, our friends at Foodhub, an online home to more than 20,000 retailers, have recently spoken to their customers in a bid to find out what their favourite savoury and sweet pastry-encrusted dish is. And the results are now in.

NOT CONVINCED: healthy veggie options don't feature in the top five pie favourites.

While vegan delights are the things that have caught the news headlines in recent months, it seems British consumers like to stick with the tried and tested. That's why the likes of meat and potato and beef and onion pies continue to feature in the top five.

But, in an incredibly close contest, it will come as no surprise to learn that steak and kidney is the UK's top pie choice, just edging it from the chicken and mushroom (last year's top pick) and the good old-fashioned plain steak delight.

THE TRADITIONAL FAVOURITE: steak and kidney is the nation's top pie filling.

“A savoury pie is such a classic British cuisine, so it comes as no surprise to see steak and kidney take the top spot," said Foodhub's Ardian Mula. "We were surprised to see that a vegetarian option didn’t make the top five, as Cheese or Cheese and Onion are usually a classic choice not just amongst plant-eaters, but meat-eaters too."

For those with a sweet tooth, you will not be surprised to learn the traditional apple pie remains the nation's number one. Following closely behind is banoffee pie, with the original Tennessee Toffee Pie landing in the third spot.

"It came as no surprise to see apple pie take the sweet treats top spot, as it’s an all-time favourite," added Mula.

LIFE OF PIE: Foodhub's annual survey shows the pie is still top fooder in Britain.
