The contenders include Jurassic World: Dominion, Elvis, Bullet Train, Lightyear<\/em> \u2013 and the latest offering from the evergreen Tom Cruise.<\/p>\n To be blunt, Top Gun \u2013 Maverick<\/em> is quite simply superb. It\u2019s heart-thumping, fuel-injected cinematic gold that delivers on practically every level. Released almost four decades after the original, it\u2019s amazing to think these characters of the 1980s can inspire new generations who didn\u2019t grow up singing Berlin\u2019s anthemic title track at every opportunity.<\/p>\n But the real secret of the success of this film is simple: it never forgets you are there to see electrifying aerial scenes and gravity-defying stunts. And you do. And there\u2019s plenty of them.<\/p>\n The plot itself \u2013 as if you cared \u2013 has echoes of The Dambusters<\/em> and, to nit-pick, halfway in you can see where the plot is going and how everything is going to end. The plain truth is I didn\u2019t care as I was enjoying the ride so much.<\/p>\n With so much to look forward to this year, the other contenders are going to have to go a long way to match this terrific film.<\/p>\n After so long, it really is incredible the sequel is this good.
