{"id":1428,"date":"2025-11-01T15:50:00","date_gmt":"2025-11-01T15:50:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/runyourownwebsite.uk\/kingsenglishsociety\/?p=1428"},"modified":"2026-07-04T10:29:41","modified_gmt":"2026-07-04T10:29:41","slug":"the-poetry-room","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/runyourownwebsite.uk\/kingsenglishsociety\/pot-pourri\/the-poetry-room\/","title":{"rendered":"The Poetry Room"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">There's a famous seaside place called Blackpool<strong><br><\/strong>That's noted for fresh air and fun<strong><br><\/strong>And Mr. and Mrs. Ramsbottom<strong><br><\/strong>Went there with young Albert, their son<strong><br><\/strong>A grand little lad were young Albert<strong><br><\/strong>All dressed in his best, quite a swell<strong><br><\/strong>With a stick with an horse's head handle<strong><br><\/strong>The finest that Woolworth's could sell<strong><br><\/strong>They didn't think much to the ocean<strong><br><\/strong>The waves they were piddlin' and small<strong><br><\/strong>There was no wrecks and nobody drowneded<strong><br><\/strong>'Fact, nothin' to laugh at at all!<strong><br><\/strong>So, seeking for further amusement<strong><br><\/strong>They paid, and went into the zoo<strong><br><\/strong>Where they'd lions and tigers and camels<strong><br><\/strong>And old ale and sandwiches, too<strong><br><\/strong>There were one great big lion called Wallace<strong><br><\/strong>His nose was all covered with scars<strong><br><\/strong>He lay in a somnolent posture<strong><br><\/strong>With the side of 'is face on the bars<strong><br><\/strong>Now Albert had heard about lions<strong><br><\/strong>How they was ferocious and wild<strong><br><\/strong>To see Wallace lyin' so peaceful<strong><br><\/strong>Well it didn't seem right to the child<strong><br><\/strong>So straightway the brave little feller<strong><br><\/strong>Not showin' a morsel of fear<strong><br><\/strong>Took 'is stick with the horse's head handle<strong><br><\/strong>And shoved it in Wallace's ear<strong><br><\/strong>You could see that the lion didn't like it<strong><br><\/strong>For givin' a kind of a roll<strong><br><\/strong>He pulled Albert inside the cage with him<strong><br><\/strong>And swallowed the little lad whole!<strong><br><\/strong>Then Pa, who had seen the occurrence<strong><br><\/strong>And didn't know what to do next<strong><br><\/strong>Said \"Mother, yon lion's ate Albert!\"<strong><br><\/strong>And Mother said \"Ee, I am vexed\"<strong><br><\/strong>Then Mr. and Mrs. Ramsbottom, quite rightly<strong><br><\/strong>When all is said and done<strong><br><\/strong>Complained to the animal keeper<strong><br><\/strong>That the lion had eaten their son<strong><br><\/strong>The keeper was quite nice about it<strong><br><\/strong>He said \"What a nasty mishap<strong><br><\/strong>Are you sure that it's your boy he's eaten?\"<strong><br><\/strong>Pa said, \"Am I sure? There's his cap!\"<strong><br><\/strong>The manager had to be sent for<strong><br><\/strong>He came and he said \"What's to-do?\"<strong><br><\/strong>Pa said \"Yon lion's ate Albert<strong><br><\/strong>And him in his Sunday clothes, too!\"<strong><br><\/strong>Then Mother said \"Right's right, young feller-<strong><br><\/strong>I think it's a shame and a sin<strong><br><\/strong>For a lion to go and eat Albert<strong><br><\/strong>And after we paid to come in\"<strong><br><\/strong>The manager wanted no trouble<strong><br><\/strong>He took out his purse right away<strong><br><\/strong>Sayin' \"How much to settle the matter?\"<strong><br><\/strong>Pa says \"What do you usually pay?\"<strong><br><\/strong>But Mother had turned a bit awkward<strong><br><\/strong>When she thought where her Albert had gone<strong><br><\/strong>She said \"No, someone's got to be summonsed!\"<strong><br><\/strong>So that was decided upon<strong><br><\/strong>Then off they went to the police station<strong><br><\/strong>In front of the Magistrate chap<strong><br><\/strong>They told him what happened to Albert<strong><br><\/strong>And proved it by showing his cap<strong><br><\/strong>The Magistrate gave his opinion<strong><br><\/strong>That no one was really to blame<strong><br><\/strong>And he said that he hoped the Ramsbottoms<strong><br><\/strong>Would have further sons to their name<strong><br><\/strong>At that Mother got proper blazin'<strong><br><\/strong>\"And thank you, sir, kindly, \" said she-<strong><br><\/strong>\"What, waste all our lives raisin' children<strong><br><\/strong>To feed ruddy lions?
