On Being Special<\/h2>\n

We cannot afford
\nTo admit
\nTo being special.
\nFor us the word
\nHas been loaded with chains,
\nHas been made into a prison
\nOr zoo
\nWhere voyeurs
\npeer through
\nThe bars
\nAt our antics<\/p>\n

To be special is to be gawped at
\nWith horror and glee
\nAs we show purple buttocks
\nAnd have peanuts
\nPoked at us.<\/p>\n

To be \"special\"
\nIs to be aware
\nMoment by aching moment
\nOf the gaping distances
\nBetween our lives
\nAnd that other busy world
\nThat keeps us out.<\/p>\n

We have to insist on our ordinariness,
\nFight for it's recognition.
\nWe breath air, eat food, love, hate, need, give.
\nWe are human.
\nWe have to insist, as Shylock did,
\nAnd insist,
\nAnd insist.<\/p>\n

And yet
\nWhen my lover looks into my eyes
\nLike she is looking into the deep well of me;
\nWhen my baby laughs into my face
\nLike we have always been connected,
\nSoul to soul;
\nWhen the sun shines on me
\nAnd flowers bloom around me\u2026\u2026.<\/p>\n

Then I know it's time
\nTo reclaim this word,
\nThrow off it's chains,
\nUnlock the prison
\nDismantle the cages at the zoo.<\/p>\n

Its time to admit-
\nYes, I am special
\nAnd you, and you, and you,
\nAnd YOU
