{"id":449,"date":"2021-01-29T11:40:53","date_gmt":"2021-01-29T11:40:53","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/runyourownwebsite.uk\/gmcdp2\/?p=449"},"modified":"2021-03-01T20:12:02","modified_gmt":"2021-03-01T20:12:02","slug":"films","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/runyourownwebsite.uk\/gmcdp2\/disabled-peoples-history\/films\/","title":{"rendered":"Films"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2>Mini Histories \u2013 From Manchester and Beyond<\/h2>\n<p>A series of 5 mini films produced by Brian Hilton (Disabled People\u2019s Archive) and Siobhan O\u2019Connor (Archives+) that highlight some key campaigns in disabled people\u2019s history.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Episode 1:<\/strong> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=ZzcfxpKosAg\">Too Frightening For Kids TV!<\/a><br \/>\nIn 1988, Granada Television\u2019s headquarters were picketed by disabled protestors after it vetoed a decision to cast disabled actor Nabil Shaban in a children\u2019s television drama.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Episode 2:<\/strong> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=nJKmmp8IMqM\">\u2018Children in Need\u2019 Versus the Wrath of DAN<\/a><br \/>\nIn 1993, disabled protestors disrupted a live BBC outside broadcast in Albert Square, Manchester, in opposition to \u2018Children In Need\u2019 and their negative portrayal of disabled people.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Episode 3:<\/strong> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=Zaxw-keh75U&amp;t=1s\">Disabled People Against Apartheid<\/a><br \/>\nIn 1982, disabled people from Manchester joined other protestors picketing the Stoke Mandeville Games, in opposition to the inclusion of a team from South Africa.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Episode 4:<\/strong> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=rfOOf_xkFUc\">The Battle of Little Peter Street<\/a><br \/>\nIn 1993, local disabled trade unionists picketed a party being held at their own union\u2019s social club in central Manchester, an inaccessible social club, down a flight of steps!<\/p>\n<p><strong>Episode 5:<\/strong> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=JFPOMF-LTNE\">The Independence Festival 1997 \u2013 2001<\/a><br \/>\nIn 1997, Manchester kept up its tradition of being a trailblazer city when it hosted the first ever annual national festival in celebration of disabled people's arts and culture.<\/p>\n<h2><a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=pB7r5EGluV4\">A Brief History of Greater Manchester Coalition of Disabled People<\/a><\/h2>\n<p><strong>(Parts 1 and 2, 1980s - 1990s)<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>This is a short film about the early history of the UK\u2019s oldest surviving coalition of disabled people.<\/p>\n<p>The film was produced by Greater Manchester Coalition of Disabled People (GMCDP) and was premiered at the Manchester Histories Digifest 2020. Funding to add British Sign Language was provided by Manchester City Council.<\/p>\n<h2><a href=\"https:\/\/player.bfi.org.uk\/free\/collection\/disabled-britain-on-film\">Disabled Britain On Film \u2013 British Film Institute<\/a><\/h2>\n<p>This collection of films looks at the representation of disabled people on screen over the past 100 years.
